Why does a broken leg mean death to a racehorse?
If you break your leg, it will be painful and debilitating but in most cases you can recover with treatment. Horses aren’t so lucky; for them a severe leg injury will usually result in death.
The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Science’s Professor Chris Whitton explains why most common treatments can’t save a horse to Cosmos Magazine.
Chris is also Head of the University of Melbourne's U-Vet Equine Centre Werribee, which offers specialist equine treatment and surgery in Melbourne. Read more about his research into equine limb injuries here.
