Melbourne students receive Rural Finance scholarships

University of Melbourne students Dale Hinkley and Kate Methven have been awarded Rural Finance Scholarships in this year’s round. The scholarship gives Victorian agriculture students financial and mentoring support.

Dale is studying the Bachelor of Agriculture and told Rural Finance working on his family’s farm before starting university gave him an interest in agribusiness.

“The best piece of advice I’ve received in the industry is: ‘Don’t let the times suit you; you suit the times,’” he said.

“I felt that was a pretty relevant quote for our industry as incomes tend to fluctuate erratically from year-to-year, so I think that it’s all-important that we make the most of our opportunities.”

The Bachelor of Agriculture allows students to specialise in production animal health, crop and soil science or agricultural economics.

Kate studies the Diploma in General Studies at the University of Melbourne’s Dookie campus.

“I think it’s a really good time to get into an agricultural career,” she told Rural Finance.

“It’s a time when it’s going to be increasingly needed throughout every country in the world and it’s so essential to our whole society.”

The Diploma in General Studies is a pathway to degrees in agriculture, science, commerce and design at Melbourne.
