Coomboona Dairy Farm Visit, 16 November 2016

Prof. Deli Chen, Prof. Jizheng He, Dr Tony Weatherley and Dr Rui Liu from the Soil Nutrients and Greenhouse Gases (SNaGG) group of the University of Melbournevisited Coomboona Dairy Farm on 16 November 2016. Coomboona Holdings is one of Australia’s largest dairy farms, with 1600 cows producing over 75 million litres of milk per year. Our research team was given a tour of the new facilities for gas measures and aeration, waste treatment and reuse, and the newly developed compost bedded barns. The on-ground staff and our research team discussed the technical challenges to maintain animal health, production quality and environmental health in their farm setting. This visit provides the team a better understanding of current practical managements and site-specific issues as we work together with Coomboona Holdings to develop a collaborative research proposal on the mitigation of nitrogen losses from animal production.
