Our facilities and capabilities

The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences has a range of facilities and capabilities to address issues in agriculture, sustainability, and the food and veterinary sciences. Through our leading research facilities, our cross-disciplinary approach, and with 800 internationally collaborating institutions, our research aims to solve challenges and create real-world impact.

Parkville Campus

Our facilities at Parkville are at the heart of Australia’s most powerful bioscience campus as well as a driver of other multidisciplinary research. Our facilities and expertise in animal health, agriculture and food sit alongside those in biosciences, engineering, medicine, earth sciences, chemistry, business and economics.

With an ever-expanding research infrastructure, researchers on our Parkville campus can expect to access the following facilities, and more:

  • 32 research laboratories and specialist equipment rooms
  • Food sensory laboratory equipped with biometric sensory analysis
  • Quarantine and biocontainment facilities for infectious disease studies
  • Laboratory biocontainment facilities for plant genetic engineering and pathology
  • Glasshouses, growth rooms and controlled environment chambers
  • Soil science laboratory with advanced analytical platforms for soil and water samples
  • Animal units Access to central research platforms and services
  • Detailed analysis of samples (e.g. soil) including elements, isotopes, gases and nutrients
  • Sequencing platforms for genomic and transcriptomic analyses
  • Mass spectrometry and proteomic analysis of proteins and their structure
  • Metabolic analysis of plant, animal and microbial systems
  • Sophisticated microscope systems including confocal and electron microscopy
